International Celebrities You Never Knew Had African Roots

How many celebrities do you know who were born in Africa? Probably just one!

It is surprising how many international celebrities say they are African American and yet they are not aware of their African roots.

That aside here is a list of some of the celebrities with their origins from Africa:

1. Akon – Senegal

Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam popularly known as Akon was born on 16th April 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

He grew up in Senegal a city named Dakar and was raised by his father, a Senegalese percussionist, who taught him music.

2.Lupita Nyong’o – Kenya

Lupita Amondi Nyong’o was born in Mexico City on 1st March 1983 and raised in Kenya from the age of one. She is a Kenyan-Mexican actress. 

She got more famous when she became a cast for Steve McQueen’s historical drama- 12 years a slave in the year 2013.

3. Trevor Noah – South Africa

Trevor Noah was born in Soweto, South Africa in 1984. He is a comedian, writer, actor, producer, political commentator and television host.

He is known for hosting The Daily Show, an American satirical news program on Comedy Central.

4. Danai Gurira – Zimbabwe

Danai Jekesai Gurira was born on 14th February 1978  in Grinnell, Lowa, United States and raised by her Zimbabwean parents.

She is an American actress and playwright who is best known for her starring roles as Michonne on the AMC horror-drama series The Walking Dead and as Okoye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
