Tyler Perry has just made history by being the first African American to own a major film studio in USA. It was officially opened at a star-studded gala event over the weekend attended by the best of Black Hollywood excellence. In addition, the event included a Sunday service and brunch, which were enjoyed by all in attendance.

Tyler Perry Studios is a 330-acre filming complex located in the Fort McPherson area at Atlanta. The studio boasts of 12 sound stages named after esteemed black performers. It was built on a site that served as a Confederate army base during the Civil War.

Some of the famous faces who were there to witness this historical moment include Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, Halle Berry, Samuel L. Jackson, director Ava DuVernay, and many others. The stars also took to social media to congratulate Tyler Perry for his great achievement that was years in the making.

Best known for his Madea film franchise, Tyler Perry is not new to the filming world. He’s had a long, sometimes difficult career as an actor, including being homeless at some point. He’s now an actor, producer and director with 20 films that have grossed more than $900 million.

There are plans to further develop the area with restaurants and retail shops so as to make the studio a destination in the community. In his words, Tyler Perry hopes to ‘continue to try to motivate and inspire people’ with Tyler Perry Studios.
