The lack of clean, breathable air is one thing that all post-apocalyptic shows and books have in common. While this may seem like fiction or something that will happen way off in the future, it’s a present reality for the people of New Delhi, India. Just like in the shows and books, this state of affairs has led to some new entrepreneurship opportunities for some people, with the opening of an oxygen bar where you can buy fresh air.
Smog, power plant emissions, fumes from burning fireworks and other components have made the air over New Delhi dirty and unbreathable over recent years. This situation has caused a lot of people to suffer from respiratory diseases even as efforts continue to be made to clean the air. One of the latest measures is the opening of an oxygen bar in New Delhi.
Known as ‘Oxy Pure’, this oxygen bar is a small shop that offers customers a breath of pollution free air at a price. For approximately $7, customers can enjoy breathing in pure oxygen for 15 minutes. This is done through tubes that are strapped to their nose. The oxygen passes through brightly colored liquids which further purify it before it is inhaled. In addition, customers can also choose to breathe in oxygen scented with lavender, lemongrass, cinnamon, eucalyptus, peppermint or spearmint. There is also a ‘pollution special’ which offers customers the option to pay for five sessions for the price of four.
While the concept of oxygen bars is not new, the benefits of such have yet to be proven. In addition, it is recommended that you stay away from them if you have a respiratory condition as it may cause more harm. The owner of the New Delhi oxygen bar, Aryavir Kumar, also plans to open other locations in the capital’s airport, as well as in the cities of Mumbai and Bangalore.
