Nairobi’s Kasarani area has become a no-go zone following a wave of protests and running battles. The wave of unrest has been caused by residents who have joined Matatu operators to demonstrate over the sorry state of their roads. Mwiki-Kasarani road to be specific.
The number of deaths from the demonstration stands at ‘two’ with transport in the area having been paralyzed for the last three days.
Yesterday attempts by striking matatu operators to block Thika road were quickly dismantled by heavy police presence in the area. On the ground, teargas canisters and water cannons were deployed to cool down the raging crowds.
Some residents, however, accused policemen of using live bullets displaying spent cartridges.
A Mwiki Sacco representative had this to say on the issue:
“The people we have elected like MCAs and the MP are not doing anything. Things on the ground are bad, you should see for yourself,” he reiterated.
On Twitter, angry residents vented out their frustrations over the issue. Here are some of the sentiments:

#Kasarani enters 4th day of peaceful demos today,we pray govt will send tractors to repair the road and not water tanker and combat police to assault residents as it was witnessed yesterday. Kenya Mainstream media has decided to give blackout to what is happening in kasarani!
