Feel like playing with fire this Valentine’s Day? Then you should definitely stop at Athi River and pay a visit to Kitengela Hot Glass. You’ll get to watch creative glass blowing displays and may even have a chance to do it yourself. All the glass used is recycled and handmade by skilled local staff, and every product is uniquely Kenyans. In addition, you can also buy some glass creations to go with as lasting memories of your great time there.

Location: Off Maasai Lodge, near Ongata Rongai, opposite Nairobi National Park

How to get there: 125 towards Ongata Rongai, alight at Masai Lodge Road, take a matatu to Tuala, then a pikipiki or a 15 minute walk to the studio

Charges for individual glass blowing: Kshs 500 – Kshs 10,000 depending on the time and complexity of the glass design ( all materials needed provided by Kitengela Hot Glass)

Chyulu Hills

For the lovers of adventure, making a stop at Emali will get you to Chyulu Hills. Here you can create fantastic memories with your partner hiking the ‘Hemingway’s Green Hills of Africa’. You can also pay a visit to the Chyulu Hills National Park where you’re likely to see large mammals like elephants, buffalo and giraffes.

Location: Makueni County

How to get there:

By road from Kibwezi: turn right off the Mombasa Road (coming from Nairobi) at Kibwezi, onto a sign posted road that leads after 9 Kms to Kithasyo Gate and Park HQ.

By road from Tsavo West: It is possible to enter the park from Tsavo West

By air: The Park has two airstrips

Park entry charges: Kshs 350 – adult, Kshs 250 – child (Citizen), Kshs 600 – adult, Kshs 350 ( Resident), USD 25 – adult, USD 15 – child (Non-Resident)

Tsavo West National Park

As one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Kenya, this park offers some of the best game viewing experiences in the world. One of its entrances is on the outskirts of Mtito Andei, and some of the great Valentine’s Day memories you can make there include experiencing Mzima Springs, cave exploration and underwater hippo viewing.

Location: Taita-Taveta County

Getting there:

By air: There are 3 airstrips in the park

Gates: Tsavo, Lake Jipe, Mtito Andei (Kamboyo HQ), Chyulu, Maktau and Ziwani.

Roads: The main access routes are through Chyulu Gate from Amboseli and Mtito Andei Gate from Nairobi. Visitors from Mombasa also use Tsavo Gate near Manyani. The Park can also be reached via Taveta – Voi road through Maktau, Ziwani and Jipe Gates.

Airstrips: Kamboyo, Kilaguni, Tsavo Gate, Jipe, Kasigau,Finch Hottons, Ziwani, and Maktau airstrips are in good.

Park entry charges: Kshs 515 – adult, Kshs 215 – child (Citizen), Kshs 1,030 – adult, Kshs 515 ( Resident), USD 52 – adult, USD 35 – child (Non-Resident)

Gazi Beach

For the sun, the sand and the incredible sunsets, the best place to go on Valentine’s Day will be Gazi beach. It is also famous for the mangrove boardwalk where you’ll get to learn about the different types of mangroves found at the coast. In addition, you and your partner can make fantastic memories on one of the dhow cruises.

Location: Ukunda

Getting there:

Via road: Get on Mombasa Road (A109) and follow it till you get to Mombasa. Take the ferry to Likoni/Ukunda and then head straight to your destination. 

By air: The easiest route is to take a flight from Nairobi to Ukunda
